Not now. Not when he'd been getting to Halloran and had the man's attention focused off D.J. and onto him. Chris grabbed for her wrist and squeezed it to warn her, but she ignored him, coming out of her shock with her mouth in full gear. "I can't wait to see you in jail. I'm gonna sit outside the bars for hours just watching you, Rich. It'll make my millennium." She yanked her wrist from Chris's grasp and moved around him. He tried to shove her back, but her anger outweighed the warning and she sidestepped his arm. Chris took a step after her, but Halloran waved him away with the gun.
D.J. marched up to her ex-husband, fury in every step. "You're a pathetic excuse for a man, Richard Halloran. You always were. I only wish I'd had the guts to stand up to my father back then. The fact I shared your house, your bed, and your name sickens me."
"Doesn't do much for me either, baby." He grabbed her by the arm and pointed her toward the door. "Time to shut your smart mouth for good, D.J. Let's go."
Chris tensed. He would have to make his move now or risk losing D.J. forever. Almost as if she'd heard his thoughts, D.J. wrenched her arm from Rich's grasp. He swore and backhanded her across the mouth. Her head snapped back with the force of the blow.
Chris gave a roar of fury and launched himself at Halloran. The man shoved D.J. so hard she flew sideways and landed in a crumpled heap on the
